Last weekend saw us making our annual trip to the SADAA SEC RTs (for the uninitiated, the South African Dog Agility Association South-East Coast Regional Trials) at Totties, on the Rheenendal Road outside Knysna. Liana had three dogs competing, while I had the opportunity to indulge my passion for dog action photography and, in the process, managed to sell a few photographs.
I never cease to be amazed by the athleticism of these dogs, some of whom navigate the courses with astonishing speed and agility. Equally wonderful to witness is the bond between dog and handler — a partnership built on trust, understanding and teamwork that is a joy to behold.
Friday was an exceptionally hot day, and I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the dogs and their handlers as they tackled the courses in the sweltering conditions. Despite the heat, however, the enthusiasm and enjoyment were evident all around. Saturday brought much cooler weather, accompanied by the occasional drop of rain. Unfortunately, Sunday’s events had to be cancelled altogether when the rain left the fields too wet, creating a risk of serious injury to both dogs and handlers.
I thought I would share a few of my favourite photographs from the weekend, capturing some of the action, athleticism and special moments that make these events such a pleasure to photograph.
